Make My Week #20 - Birthday Season

It seems birthday party season is upon us and I have such difficulty with the whole present thing.
I love presents and I love giving them but I also struggle with the amount some people spend on children's birthday party gifts and when your child gets invited to several birthdays during the year how much can you end up spending. Or do you just buy cheap 'landfill' knowing it won't last much longer than the party???

On the other hand I don't want my child to be the kid who brings stink presents to birthdays ..... catch 22??
So mainly I try to make the gifts my boys take but it's not easy - especially for boys. This year it is 6-year-old birthdays and I have decided that personalised cushions are going to be the order of the day. Flip choose the colours and helped with the design so he felt proud and happy taking it with him.

This is the latest for a birthday last weekend and you'll be seeing more over the next month judging by the invites coming in!

How do you feel about buying gifts for multiple other children during the year, what is your 'go to' gift and what is your price guide??

Thats great that you and boy were responsible for choosing and creating the gift.. that will probably be the one gift that will reside in his room for years to come :)

Where I used to live, $20 was the normal gift for most people, but it soon added up ( it was due to the lack of shops ) However the last party, inspiration struck and I made a little purse and hairclip for the party girl.... boys can be alot more difficult! Though wallets for boys could be another good one, like the lunch money cuff :)

Great idea, and I love how Flip had his input too. I usually try and make presents nowadays, occasionally with something small that I've bought added in. I've made headbands for my kids girl friends, and they only have one boy friend who hasn't had his birthday yet (he'll be 2) so I haven't thought about that yet! I really love this pillow idea though - might do some for the nieces and nephews this year!

A great idea, Miriam. These will be treasured.

I try not to buy 'tat' for birthdays either. I set a $25 limit and bulk buy decent (non-plastic!!!) toys when the sales are on. x

Wallets could be very cool - I guess the fabric has a lot to do with it too. The cost thing is hard if you go to 5 parties at $20 it adds up very quickly

I've made 2 for my big boy (a clock and alphabet) and a race car one for my littler one and they both LOVE them so I'm hopeful other kids feel the same. One mother whose daughter got one for her 6th said it was the favourite....

Sales are the way to go I think I just can't stand the idea of buying total plastic junk

OMGsh, what a great idea, I'm the kind of mum who buys a bag of lollies, a cheap little toy and $10 tucked into a homemade card... I think me and the kids are going to have to be a bit more creative this year and your cushions look fab-oh!

Thank you - they aren't too much work to make and the variety keeps me interested.
